Eating For Life
Make healthful eating and portion control just another routine. Healthful living happens in community. We need each other, especially to overcome our weaknesses. Ecclesiastes 4:12 says “Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”
And why is it so important for all of us to eat for life? 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a
price. Therefore honor God with your body.
The all around best eating plan for life out there is Weight Watchers®, the
online program NOT the attending meetings option. And no, I am not an employee nor do I receive any bonus for referrals. My mention of the
Weight Watchers® is NOT to use it as a diet or a weight loss plan (although if you are over your ideal weight it most definitely will help you to lose what you need to), but my focus is to use their points system as a way to gauge how much is the right amount to eat for optimum health. They have a phenomenal website www.weightwatchers.com
where they have many tools to guide and assist you (for a fee). At many times
throughout the year they offer a free one week trial of their online program. However you do not need to use the
Weight Watchers® program to
follow the points system of eating.
The foods that are part of a healthful diet include: plenty of fruits and vegetables, whole grain and other high fiber carbohydates, low fat meats and dairy for protein, and overall, foods with little to no artificial additives, colors, or preservatives. A higher fiber/lower fat food plan, which is what the Weight Watchers® supports, has been clinically proven to be heart healthy, and a factor in helping to prevent cancer. However, unless you have a diagnosed medical condition such as diabetes, there should be no food that is entirely off limits. It is human nature that the "forbidden" becomes the most tempting, and a potential downfall (think Adam and Eve!). The plan has a built in weekly cushion that allows you the freedom and flexibility in food choices that is healthful mentally, and for life! It is family friendly and living life focused.
Regarding all the other "diets" out there. There are no health benefits to restrictive diets or to strict rules on when to eat and in what combinations. You may be able to stick to these rigid plans for a short time, but they are designed for failure because they set up unrealistic standards and restrictions to aspire to and to maintain. They are suicidal for an eating disorder sufferer, and simply unhealthful mentally for the rest of the population.
Where most of us are weakest and need the most guidance, is in portion control, or even in gauging what an appropriate portion is. What 1 serving looks like - printable pdf file wallet card http://hp2010.nhlbihin.net/portion/servingcard7.pdf
The Weight Watchers® website has a searchable database of foods and point values including just about all of the major restaurants. However you can calculate your own point values by looking at the nutrition information for the food you are eating, focusing on the calories, fiber, and fat per serving and then utilizing the following formula: Points = (Calories / 50) - (Fiber * 0.2) + (Fat * 0.083) You can certainly do the math on your own however there is a points calculator on the Weight Watchers website in addition to a chart that you can use track your points (as well as being able to record your exercise). People though have created their own points calculators. Here are a few of them.
